4.
Organise your Thoughts First and Then Your Research
Materials
Not only should you read the essay material carefully but you
should also organise the information in an easy to read
manner. You can start by highlighting the main points and
making notes, gathering your thoughts along the way. You
should think about how you will string all of this information
together so that it flows in a cohesive manner. Allow
yourself the time to change or refine things as you amass
materials along the way. Even if your essay does not
require you to undertake research, you should still allow
yourself time to gather your thoughts down on paper.
5. Don't Plagiarise from Others
Make sure you keep track of any citations or quotes that you
use in your essay. Do not copy other’s work without
proper citation and recognition to that person for their
original work.
You could be caught for cheating if you take someone’s work and
change a few of the words around in it and submit it to your
University, especially as Universities use state of the art
software called Turnitin to detect this type of
plagiarism.
UK Assignments has heard of many examples of where students
have submitted work that is not their own, only to find that
the lecturer has read the same work a few years earlier.
If you are not sure that your work is totally original,
we can check it for you, just submit your essay or dissertation

6. Write a Quick Draft of your Essay
You shouldn’t worry too much about getting the introduction or
conclusion down on paper at first. Just focus hard on
getting your ideas down on paper initially. Write your
essay in your ‘own voice’, like as if you were talking to a
friend. Whilst writing, remember you can always review
what has been written and rewrite it if you are not happy with
the first draft.
7. Write Multiple Drafts if you have to
Think carefully about whether you will need to rearrange the
essay structure as you go along. If you normally
reorganise your work by cutting and pasting sentences, make
sure that the merged sentences flow correctly. Then
be critical of the overall look and feel of the essay paying
special attention to the flow of words and ideas.
After you have an initial draft ready, revisit both the
introduction and conclusion chapters of your essay. Does
the introduction that you have written set the scene for the
content and the subject properly? Does the
conclusion summarise clearly what you are presenting?
Does your essay convey all the points you wanted to
make? Do the ideas flow properly? Just
continue reading and rewriting your essay as much as you feel
is right to achieve the objectives of the essay.
8. Thought Clarity
By writing your essay in a concise manner, it forces you to
think clearer. Make every one of your words count by
using active verbs and writing active sentences. It might
help if you print out your work and cross out those words that
are not required.
Overall be critical of your work and strive towards perfection
through clear thinking and language.
9. Presentation and Format Count.
Poor spelling, improper grammar, margins in the wrong place and
other styling problems will result in your essay being marked
down. Be diligent and check for these mistakes as
they will cost you vital marks after you have submitted your
essay to your University lecturer.
10. Don’t Panic
If you have followed all the steps above, you are going
to achieve high marks in your essay. Good luck from
